WebFeb 21, 2015 · The oppidum was the area of Camulodunum, the Iron Age stronghold where the Roman town of Colchester was later built. We have been archaeologically investigating this part of the oppidum, to the south of the modern town centre, since 2000, during the redevelopment of the old garrison. WebA description of individual Iron Age dykes in alphabetical order is given (24--52). This is followed by an analysis of the pre-Roman development of the dykes and of the dykes in the Roman period. Roman military fortifications were next constructed, including auxiliary forts and a legionary fortress at Colchester.
